Buddha (as avatar)

The Buddha was drawn into the Vaishnava avatar list by about the 8th century, usually in the ninth place. Sri Vaishnava and Smarta lists in the south replace him with Balarama; Maharashtra sometimes with Vithoba and Odisha with Jagannath; the Garuda Purana carries both lists.
