Samjna
Wife of the Sun. In the Rigveda (10.17) she is Saranyu, daughter of Tvashtri and mother of Yama, who vanishes and is replaced by a look-alike. The Puranas call her Samjna, daughter of Vishvakarma, who leaves her shadow in her place because she cannot bear the Sun's heat and lives as a mare among the Northern Kurus until his blaze is trimmed. Mother of Manu, Yama, Yamuna and the Ashvins.
