The idea that Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (Rudra) are three faces of one divine reality, charged with creation, preservation and dissolution. The three are first named together in the Maitri Upanishad as portions of one being matched to the three gunas; the job-description version belongs to the Puranas. No living tradition treats the three as equals: each school reads the triad through its own supreme deity.
