Aiyanar

Guardian god of the Tamil village boundary, shown on horseback with a sword, with a shrine outside almost every village. Between the 9th and 16th centuries his cult was absorbed into the Brahmanical Shasta, the son of Shiva and Vishnu's Mohini form, and today village priests increasingly dress him in Puranic style. Kerala's Ayyappa is the other regional face of the same Shasta identification: both are called Hariharaputra, but Aiyanar keeps his village-guardian character while Ayyappa carries the Pandalam, Mahishi and Vavar legends. A 5th-century Aiyanar image at Isurumuniya in Sri Lanka shows the cult's older reach.
