Shiva

The great god of the Shaiva traditions and one of the three of the Puranic Trimurti, where he is assigned dissolution. Scholars describe the Shiva known today as a merger of the Vedic storm-god Rudra with many local cults absorbed over centuries; the tradition's own origin stories (the pillar of light, the five faces, the half-woman form) explain how a formless lord takes shape rather than where he came from. Worshipped mostly as the linga, he lives on Kailash with Parvati, rides the bull Nandi, carries the trident, and is the centre of a geography of temple claims from Kashi and Kedarnath to Chidambaram and Madurai.
