Brahma Temple, Bindusagar

East India · Bhubaneswar, Odisha Shaiva

Odisha remembers Brahma as a guest who kept his word. When Lingaraj, the Shiva of Bhubaneswar, was crowned, Brahma attended, and when asked to remain he made a promise instead: every year in the month of Chaitra, on the eighth day called Ashokashtami, he would come back and take the reins of Lingaraj's chariot. The small fifteenth-century temple beside the Bindusagar tank, built in the Gajapati period in late Kalingan style, houses him for that purpose, a four-armed black stone Brahma holding the Vedas, a water-pot and a rosary, one hand raised in reassurance. A second Odia Brahma temple, rebuilt in the twelfth century, stands at Niali in Cuttack district.
