The story, beat by beat

  1. On the Karthigai full moon, when the Krittika star rides with the moon, Tamil homes are lined with clay lamps.
  2. At Tiruvannamalai a cauldron of ghee is lit on the summit of Arunachala at dusk.
  3. The beacon stands for the pillar of fire that Brahma and Vishnu could not measure, which the hill is said to be.
  4. The same day recalls the six sparks that became Kartikeya, nursed by the Krittika stars.
  5. At Tiruchengode the half-woman image goes in procession.
  6. The festival is already named in the Sangam anthology Akananuru.

How it is told, place by place

Base telling · Temple tradition

Tiruvannamalai (Arunachala Deepam)

South India · Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu Shaiva

On the evening of the Karthigai full moon a flame is carried out of the sanctum at Tiruvannamalai at the same moment as a great cauldron of ghee is lit on the top of the hill, and the light can be seen across the plain. The town says the hill is the pillar of fire itself, the column that Brahma flew up and Vishnu dug down and neither could measure, cooled into rock so that people could live near it; the beacon is that pillar burning again for one night. Families across Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the Tamil parts of Sri Lanka set out rows of clay lamps at their doors, a custom old enough to be sung in the Sangam Akananuru, and the Karthigai star that gives the month its name also names the six mothers who nursed Murugan, so the same lamps are his.

Kanda Puranam reading (Kartikeya's day)

South India · Tamil Nadu Kaumara

For Murugan's devotees the day belongs to the six sparks from Shiva's faces that became six children on the Saravana lake and were raised by the Krittika maidens; the lamps are lit for the birth of the six-faced god.

What is different here:

Same date, different myth: Kartikeya's birth rather than the pillar.

Tiruchengode (Ardhanarishvara procession)

South India · Tiruchengode, Tamil Nadu Shaiva

At the hill temple of Tiruchengode the image of Shiva as half woman is carried out on this day, and Tiruvannamalai keeps the same full moon as the night Parvati was taken back into Shiva's body after her penance.

What is different here:

Connects the day to Ardhanarishvara and to the Arunachala reunion.
