Parvati
Daughter of the mountain Himavat and Mena, the rebirth of Sati, who won Shiva as her husband by long austerity after Kama's arrow failed. Mother of Ganesha and Kartikeya, half of Ardhanarishvara, the placid Gauri and, when roused, Kali. In the Bhagavata's poison episode Shiva drinks the halahala only after asking her leave. Her festivals are Teej and Gangaur in the north-west and Thiruvathira in Kerala.
