Taraknath temple tradition

East India · Tarakeswar, Hooghly, West Bengal Folk

A milkman named Mukunda Ghosh noticed that one cow came home every evening with her udder empty. He followed her into the scrub and watched her stand over a black stone and let her milk run down onto it. The stone was Shiva. About the same time the god came in a dream to the local zamindar Rao Bharamalla, a Rajput of Udaipur stock, and told him where to build. The temple was raised around the stone in the Bengali style, and Tarakeswar became the place Bengal walks to on Mondays, at Shivaratri, for the five days of the Gajan before the Chaitra new year, and in Shravan with pots of Ganga water on the shoulder.
