Ekamra Purana / Lingaraj temple

East India · Bhubaneswar, Odisha Shaiva

Before Bhubaneswar had a tower, the god of the place was worshipped under one mango tree, and the thirteenth-century Ekamra Purana takes its name from that tree. Beneath the temple, the tradition says, a hidden river runs out and rises in the great Bindusagar tank beside it. The Somavamsi king Jajati Keshari brought his capital here and the temple rose to fifty-five metres, the tallest in the city. Once a year on Ashokashtami the god leaves it: he is carried to a chariot and drawn to the Rameshwar shrine, and the driver of that chariot is Brahma.
