Rudra
The Vedic layer of Shiva: a fierce, howling storm-god of the Rigveda with matted hair, tawny colour, bow and arrows, father of the Maruts and praised as the best of physicians. Three full hymns address him (RV 1.114, 2.33, 7.46); the adjective shiva, propitious, is first applied to him at RV 10.92.9. The Yajurveda's Shatarudriya litany pairs his terrifying and protective names, and the Shvetashvatara Upanishad raises him to the one Lord. Vaishnava texts (Bhagavata 3.12) make Rudra a birth from Brahma's brow.
