The twelve Jyotirlingas
The twelve shrines where, after the pillar of light between Brahma and Vishnu, Shiva's radiance is said to have settled: Somnath, Mallikarjuna (Srisailam), Mahakaleshwar (Ujjain), Omkareshwar, Vaidyanath (Deoghar), Bhimashankar, Rameswaram, Nageshwar, Vishwanath (Kashi), Trimbakeshwar, Kedarnath and Grishneshwar, out of sixty-four such places in tradition. The Shiva Purana's Shatarudra and Kotirudra Samhitas and the Dvadasha Jyotirlinga Stotram are the textual anchors.
