Madurai

The Pandya capital of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar, whose temple was sacked by Malik Kafur in 1311, reopened under Vijayanagara and expanded by the Nayaks into fourteen towers and the thousand-pillared hall. The Tiruvilaiyadal Puranam sets Shiva's sixty-four games here; the Chithirai festival re-enacts Meenakshi's wedding.
