Sankarankovil

Tenth-century Pandya temple of Sankaralinga, Gomathi Amman and Sankaranarayana. Its sthala puranam tells of Gomathi's penance that brought Shiva and Vishnu as one image, a self-born linga found in an anthill, and the Aadi Thapasu festival that re-enacts the penance; anthill sand from the shrine is given as medicine.
