Suryā, the Sun's daughter

The Sun's daughter, the bride of the wedding hymn (Rigveda 10.85). Savitr gives her away; Soma is the wooer and the Ashvins the groomsmen. Elsewhere she chooses the Ashvins and mounts their car.

Suryā, the Sun's daughter consort of

  • Soma (God)
    In the wedding hymn Soma woos the Sun's daughter and Savitr gives her to him.
  • The Ashvins (God)
    The Ashvins are the two husbands of the Sun's daughter, whom she chose (RV 4.43.6, 7.69.4). In RV 10.85 they are only the groomsmen.
  • Pushan (God)
    Macdonell: 'probably as the husband of Surya' Pushan is asked in the wedding hymn to lead the bride. This is his inference.

    The bride of the Ashvins is the Sun's daughter. In the wedding hymn it is Savitr, the Sun God, who gives her away.
