Grandson of Prahlada, the generous asura king who gave Vamana three paces despite Shukra's warning and offered his own head for the third; sent to rule Sutala with Vishnu as his doorkeeper and promised the future Indra's seat. Kerala's Onam and the Deccan's Bali Padyami remember his yearly return.
