Venkateswara

Vishnu as the lord of the Venkata hill, the temple tradition's answer to why the god left Vaikuntha: after Bhrigu's kick and Lakshmi's departure he came to earth as Srinivasa, sat in an anthill under a tamarind tree, married Padmavati with money borrowed from Kubera, and stays on the hill as the debt is paid through pilgrims' offerings. The Venkatachala Mahatmyam is the accepted temple legend; the deity is described in the Brahmanda, Bhavishyottara, Padma and Skanda Puranas.
