Tirumala

South India · Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh Vaishnava 🪔 Brahmotsavam

The great annual festival of Venkateswara at Tirumala is called Brahmotsavam because tradition holds that Brahma himself first worshipped the god on the hill and conducted the festival in his honour; the creator is thus the archetypal priest of the event rather than the deity it celebrates. Nine days of processions carry the god around the temple on his various mounts. The ritual texts grade such festivals by length and quality: nine days for the highest, seven for the middle, five for the lowest.
