Bhagavata and Vishnu Puranas

Pan-India All traditions

The Puranas measure the world by Brahma's clock. His waking day, a kalpa, lasts 4.32 billion human years and is followed by a night of equal length in which the world is withdrawn; a full day and night is therefore 8.64 billion years. Within each day fourteen Manus reign in turn, each for about 306.72 million years, with short twilights between them. Brahma himself lives a hundred divine years of 360 such days, a span of 311.04 trillion years, after which the whole cosmos dissolves. Tradition counts fifty of those years as spent; the present kalpa, named for the white boar, is the first day of the fifty-first.
