The story, beat by beat

  1. The Rakshasa brothers Malyavan, Sumali and Mali ask Vishvakarma for a dwelling like Shiva's.
  2. He tells them of Lanka on Trikuta by the southern sea, which he built at Indra's command.
  3. They occupy it; later they flee from Vishnu and it lies empty.
  4. Vishravas sends his son Kubera to live there.

Three Rakshasa brothers, made arrogant by Brahma's boons, ask Vishvakarma for a home. He directs them to Lanka, thirty leagues wide with golden walls, which he had built at Indra's command. After they abandon it in fear of Vishnu, the sage Vishravas tells his son Kubera to live in the empty city built by Vishvakarma.
