Ambubachi Mela

The yearly gathering at the Kamakhya temple, Guwahati, in the Assamese month of Ahar (mid-June). The temple is shut for three days for the goddess's rest; cooking, worship and farming are suspended; on the fourth day she is bathed, the door opens and pilgrims receive spring water and a piece of red cloth.
