Sringeri

The town on the Tunga in Karnataka where Shankara founded his southern seat and the temple of Sharadamba (Saraswati). Tradition says he chose it on seeing a cobra shade a frog about to spawn from the noon sun; his sandalwood image of the goddess was replaced by Vidyaranya's gold one in the fourteenth century.
