Mahabharata, Adi Parva 224-236

Pan-India All traditions

Agni, pale from a surfeit of ghee, asks Krishna and Arjuna to let him eat Khandava, which Indra protects for his friend Takshaka. Armed by Varuna and by Agni himself, the two turn back everything that flees and hold off Indra until a voice tells him Takshaka is safe elsewhere. Maya is spared at Arjuna's word and four Sarngaka chicks by their hymn to Agni. Agni recovers.
