Adi Shankara
The Advaita teacher (traditionally eighth century). In the Madhaviya Shankara Digvijaya he debates Mandana Mishra with Mandana's wife Ubhaya Bharati as judge, is examined by her in turn, recognises her as Saraswati and promises her a temple at Sringeri; in the Kashmir tradition he ascends the Throne of Omniscience at Sharada Peeth after the goddess's own voice questions him.
