The story, beat by beat

  1. Madhu and Kaitabha spring up and seek to kill Brahma while Vishnu sleeps.
  2. Brahma praises the Sleep dwelling in Vishnu's eyes as the queen of the universe.
  3. He calls her the Night of the world's destruction, the Great Night and the Night of delusion.
  4. The goddess of darkness leaves Vishnu's body and he wakes to fight the two.

While Vishnu sleeps on the cosmic ocean two demons threaten Brahma on the lotus. Brahma praises Vishnu's Sleep as the great Goddess, creator, protector and consumer of the world, and among her names calls her the Night of destruction, the Great Night and the Night of delusion. She withdraws from Vishnu's eyes, mouth and heart, and he rises and fights the demons.
