Varuna's servant seizes Nanda

The story, beat by beat

  1. Nanda fasts on Ekadashi and enters the Yamuna to bathe while it is still dark.
  2. A servant of Varuna seizes him for bathing at a forbidden hour and takes him to his master.
  3. Krishna hears the cowherds' cries and goes to Varuna's court.
  4. Varuna worships Krishna, begs pardon for his servant's ignorance and returns Nanda.
  5. Nanda tells the cowherds what he saw, and they wonder at Krishna.

After an Ekadashi fast Nanda bathes in the Yamuna in the dark of night; a servant of Varuna seizes him and brings him to Varuna. Krishna goes there. Varuna honours him, says the purpose of his life is fulfilled by the sight, asks forgiveness for his foolish servant and gives Nanda back. The cowherds, hearing of it, take Krishna for the Lord.
