Durga Puja
The autumn festival of the goddess's victory over Mahishasura, kept in Bengal as Uma's homecoming: Mahalaya marks her leaving Kailash, married daughters go to their parents' houses, and the immersion on Vijaya Dashami is her going back to Shiva. The Agomoni and Bijoya songs, first shaped by Ramprasad Sen in the eighteenth century, tell of Menaka's worry, Giriraj sent to fetch her, the three days at home and the parting before dawn.
