Idumban

Also called: Idumba, Idumbasuran

The asura disciple of Agastya who carried the hills Sivagiri and Sakthigiri south on a pole across his shoulders, the first kavadi, fought the boy standing on one of them at Palani and was killed and revived; he became Murugan's gatekeeper, and his shrine on the Palani hill is worshipped before the god. One telling makes him the former guru of Surapadman.
