The first day of Boishakh, the first month of the Bengali year (Bangabda), kept on 14 April in Bangladesh by the fixed calendar of 1966/1987 and on 14 or 15 April in West Bengal and Tripura by the Surya Siddhanta, the morning after the sun enters Aries. Shopkeepers open a new ledger (haal khata) after a Lakshmi-Ganesha puja and feed their customers sweets, families wear new clothes, Kolkata holds prabhat pheris with Tagore's songs, and Dhaka wakes to Chhayanaut's dawn concert at Ramna Batamul and the Mangal Shobhajatra of the Faculty of Fine Arts. The evening before is Chaitra Sankranti, the last day of the year, with the Gajan and Charak of Shiva.
