The Srivaishnava Guruparampara

South India · ta Vaishnava 🪔 Pongal

Vishnuchitta, the temple gardener of Srivilliputhur known as Periyalvar, finds a baby girl under a tulasi plant and names her Kodhai. She secretly wears the garland meant for the god and looks at herself in a well. Discovering this, he discards it and makes another; the god in a dream asks for the worn one, and she is called Andal and Sudikkodutta Sudarkodi. Refusing any mortal husband, she keeps the Margazhi vow and sings the Thiruppavai. Ranganatha of Srirangam asks for her; she is carried there as a bride and merges into the image. Her wedding is celebrated on Bhogi.
