Shatapatha Brahmana 2.2.4

Pan-India All traditions

Alone in the beginning, Prajapati produces Agni from his mouth, which is why fire eats. With no plants or trees on the bald earth, the new-born fire turns open-mouthed on its maker. Terrified, he rubs his palms, which is why they are hairless, and gets a milk offering. The first, mixed with hair, he pours out and it becomes the plants; the second he hesitates over until his own greatness says offer it, and he does so with svaha. Sun and wind arise and Agni turns away: by the offering Prajapati saved himself from Agni, Death. Later Agni, Vayu and Surya ask him who gets the first milk offering and he awards it to Agni.
